This seems like a ridiculous issue, but basically although it fits the thunderbolt port of the M1 Mac, it doesn't click in at all. Admittedly I'm not too familiar with Thunderbolt/USB-C and so on, which is why I got an Apple rep to point me towards the correct adapter. I bought a Belkin USB-C to HDMI adapter to use as a second monitor on my M1 Mac Mini.
